VÉRTESI ERŐMŰ Zrt. Recultivation of the Bokod Mud Pond

Pollution causes

Vértesi Erőmű Zrt. has disposed strongly alkaline mud and more than 20 million tons of slag, dust-ash and gypsum waste produced during its operation in its Bokod site since 1961 in six storage ponds occupying 186 hectares. Two of the ponds are still actively used by the Vértes Power Plant, and the remaining four have been abandoned. The recultivation of these four ponds became necessary, because dry dust-ash is prone to discharging dust and thus causes environmental pollution.

The recultivation project

The primary recultivation goal is to eliminate discharging dust, namely to isolate the slag and dust-ash mix accumulated in the ash lagoon from the environment, while the secondary goal is to reintegrate the area in the landscape and to prevent environmental pollution.

Special project features

The cover material used for recultivation partially comes from waste recovery.

In a wet environment, dust-ash and slag have formed strong aggregates in some places.

Main project data

Preparing detailed plans for the recultivation of 4 mud ponds.

Implementation of the 30 cm bottom layer for the upper recultivation layer in 3 mud ponds: 345,036 m2.

Implementation of the rainwater drainage system for 3 mud ponds.

Sod revetment (grassing) of the entire surface (345,036 m2).

Time period: from 2014 to 2016

Financing: Public procurement tender

Client: Vértesi Erőmű Zrt.

Total project value: approx. €2.3 million

Status: in progress
